Featured Article - What Now Brown Cow?
"What now is not just a panic-stricken question tossed out into a dark unknown. What now can also be our joy. It is a declaration of possibility, of promise, of chance. It acknowledges that our future is open, that we may well do more than anyone expected of us, that at every point in our development we are still striving to grow."
~ author Ann Patchett, from her book What now?
What now? is the title of a small book, readable in one sitting, by one of my favorite authors, Ann Patchett. It is based on her lauded commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College yet is applicable to anyone who is transitioning from one life stage to another, changing careers, or at any point where they are struggling with that question.
In an essay on the Amazon page for this book she shares: "When the first copy came in the mail, I gave it to my 86-year-old mother-in-law who was visiting from Mississippi. After she read it, she said she wanted copies for all of her friends. "We’re going through a real period of What now? ourselves," she told me. "At our age we’re all wondering what’s going to happen next. The question is always there. It’s just that sometimes you hear it a little louder."
A few months ago I found myself stopped dead in my tracks, hopelessly stuck, and yes, a wee bit panic-stricken. My life consisted of work, work, work but I didn't like the direction my business had taken. Everything seemed to be a struggle. I lost my joy. So being an avid reader and life-long learner, I set out to find some answers and find my way back to that joy of living and working.
Two things have worked miraculously (for me) to bring me back into action. One is this inspiring book that although only 97 pages of text and photos, speaks volumes.
The other is a process exercise created by Robert Middleton of Action Plan Marketing that works beautifully to get a person unstuck. He created this process to help independent professionals who are stuck in implementing their marketing plans.
However, it works in any area where you may be stuck. My buddy coach took me through the process and I have it in my own coaching toolkit to help my clients get unstuck. If you are interested in learning more, contact me.
You can also find info on Robert's blog at: http://actionplan.blogs.com and click on Unstuck = Unstoppable in the right column.
I am feeling pretty unstoppable myself. How about you?
With loving kindess,
Susan
