Greetings/News

Welcome!

September 22nd was the autumnal equinox. Like a light switch summer turned off and the first day of fall turned on. In the northern hemisphere our temperatures are dropping, the trees are beginning to show off their glorious coats of vibrant color, and the lazy, hazy days of summer are officially over.

Today's calendar also shows we have 99 days left in 2008. That's 99 days remaining to accomplish the goals you set for yourself back in January. How are you doing with that? Have you even given it much thought? Or are you already making a plan for an even better 2009? If you need help, or a booster shot, you might want to avail yourself of a TastyBite Coaching for Clarity session to keep you true to your vision. More information can be found below.

Featured Article:  The Times They Are A-Changin'

"…As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'."
~Bob Dylan (1964)

Listen up, fellow Creative Multipreneurs. The times they are a-changin' and the good news is it's to your benefit.

According to bestselling author Daniel Pink in his consciousness-awakening book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule The Future, we are moving out of the Information Age, with a workforce and life attitude that has been largely dominated by left-brain attributes—literal, sequential, analytical, logical, and functional, and into the Conceptual Age. Knowledge was king; long live the king. Not anymore. Not here in the U.S. anyway.

Pink attributes this change to three things: Asia, Automation, and Abundance. High tech, left-brain type jobs are being outsourced to Asia, where the work can be done far more cheaply. Or, computers and automation that can do it faster are replacing them.

We live in an age of abundance with a plentitude of shopping opportunities. It is no longer enough that a product or service be functional. We want an aesthetically pleasing form and a compelling story that touches our soul. We consumers want what we buy to have meaning and we want to know, like and trust the seller.

To compete in the marketplace in this emerging Conceptual Age, we must employ our right-brain attributes—simultaneous, contextual, metaphorical, aesthetic, and empathic.

In the Conceptual Age we must complement our left-brained reasoning with the addition of high concept and high touch skills. High concept involves the ability to see the big picture, to detect patterns and relationships, to craft a great and meaningful story, and to combine seemingly unrelated ideas into something novel. High touch involves the ability to empathize with others, and to understand, sense or intuit subtleties in human interaction.

To stand out in a crowded marketplace we must engage our creative right-brain aptitudes that are high touch and high concept. As Dan Pink says, "We must perform work that overseas knowledge workers can't do cheaper, that computers can't do faster, and that satisfies the aesthetic, emotional, and spiritual demands of a prosperous time."

It is your time to shine, my friends.

With loving kindess,

Susan

Greetings/News

Welcome!

Happy Autumn, Creative Multipreneurs! Oh how I love this time of year. While we still have the look and feel of a Pacific NW summer here, there is a sense of excitement and newness in the air. The kids at the bus stop near my home office are wearing their new back-to-school finery as they noisily greet and chase each other around while waiting for that big orange bus with the squeaky brakes to come down the hill.

Autumn is a fresh, crisp move-into-new-action time for me. What's new? Or, maybe I should say: renewed. I am back on track with publishing this ezine twice a month on the 5th and 20th.  Starting this Monday (September 8th), I will be blogging regularly at http://www.creativemultipreneurs.com. And, I am finally getting back into writing the book I'd intended to publish last autumn.  Are you catching the writing theme?

Featured Article:  Write Your Way to Clarity

"In order to find our creativity—or, for that matter, our spirituality—we must begin with where we are."
~ Julia Cameron

Recently, I added Julia Cameron's book Finding Water: The Art of Perseverance to my home library. It completes her bestselling trilogy on the creative process—beginning with The Artist's Way and Walking in This World.

In each one of these books, she starts out asking the reader to make a commitment to using three basic tools:

1. Morning Pages
2. The Artist's Date
3. Weekly Walking

Morning pages have been a part of my life off and on for sixteen years. What are morning pages? They are simply three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing usually done upon awakening—whenever that may be for you. It could even be done after a nap.

There is no right or wrong way to do morning pages. Just let it flow. These pages are just for you. Nobody else is allowed to read them. So let loose and dump it all out on your 8 ½ by 11 pages.

Don't know what to write? Then write that you don't know have anything to say and how that makes you feel and blah, blah, blah… off you go. Just get that hand moving across the page and write whatever comes to mind. Nothing is too stupid, silly, petty, whiney or weird. Just write three pages… and then do it again the next day.

When people ask Julia, "Why do we write morning pages?" She says it is to get to the other side of our fear, our negativity, and beyond the reach of our internal censor, which tends to reside in our Logic brain—to move us from our neat, linear logic brain and into our creative artist brain where all things are possible.

So, how does clarity come from writing longhand, stream-of-consciousness pages every morning? They are immediate. We are grounded in the "now" of our lives. We drain away our negativity and in clearing out the gunk, we gain a clearer picture of where we are and where we want to go. Try it for at least 30 days. It works.

With loving kindess,

Susan

Featured Article:  ADD & Creative Multipreneurs

Are you a person who has always felt a little different? Do you march to your own drummer?  Do you often feel misunderstood?  Of course, there is the pressure to settle down, choose one thing and stick with it anthem sung by those who think they have your best interests at heart.

In my nearly ten years of coaching, the majority of clients I attract are 'creative' types who enjoy or desire self-employment at one level or another. As I learned more about what I term 'creative multipreneurs' and defined this way of being in my web content and this ezine, I would receive wonderful emails and phone calls from people telling me how much they identified with what I described.

They felt understood and some hired me to coach them. And sometimes, almost as an afterthought, they would share that they had been diagnosed as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (H for Hyperactivity). In order to better understand my clients (and maybe myself), I started reading everything I could get my hands on about ADD in adults

One author in particular, Lynn Weiss, Ph.D., has written several books over the years and has never believed that this way of being is a disorder. She believes that ADD is a brainstyle diversity issue and that no one brainstyle is superior or more normal than another. We individuals can figure out from reading a list of ADD attributes to what degree we identify with this brainstyle.

In her book, Attention Deficit Disorder In Adults: A Different Way of Thinking (4th revised edition), she states:

"It does not take a rocket scientist to identify ADD characteristics in yourself or in another. Never in my forty years of counseling, child development, and human behavior work have I seen as high a level of accurate self-recognition as I have with Attention Deficit Disorder. If you identify with what you read from a list of attributes of ADD, you can be sure you are a person with an ADD style of brain construction."

"Because there are no exact criteria for ADD, it can't be said that you "have it" or you "don't have it." Instead you will have more or fewer ADD attributes. Some folks have lots and lots of ADD attributes, while others have almost none. And a whole bunch of people have some ADD attributes and some linear attributes and fall in the middle of a brainstyle. I call these folks 'bridge people.'  They are useful at helping people with opposite brainstyles to communicate and work together."

She includes this list of twenty-nine positive attributes of ADD:

1. Sensitive
2. Empathetic with the feelings of others
3. Feels things deeply
4. Creative in nature (including problem solving)
5. Inventive
6. Often sees things from a unique perspective
7. Great at finding things that are lost
8. Perceptually acute
9. Stand-up comic
10. Spontaneous
11. Fun
12. Energetic
13. Open and unsecretive
14. Eager for acceptance and willing to work for it
15. Responsive to positive reinforcement
16. Doesn't harbor resentment
17. Quick to do what one likes to do
18. Difficult to fool
19. Looks past surface appearance to the core of people, situations, and issues
20. Down to earth
21. Good networker
22. Sees unique relationships between people and things
23. Cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary
24. Less likely to get in a rut or go stale
25. Original, with a sense of humor
26. Observant
27. Loyal
28. Intense when interested in something
29. More likely to do things because they want to than because they should, thus often wholehearted in efforts

How many of these positive attributes do you possess? In this article we are taking a peek at ADD in a nonjudgmental way, appreciating a different brainstyle, and seeing how we—with our creative multipreneur traits—may compare.

For a more comprehensive list that includes the challenges of the ADD brainstyle, see the New ADD Assessment Checklist in Appendix A of Lynn Weiss' book mentioned above.

With loving kindess,

Susan

Featured Article - Perspective and the Macarena

Monday through Friday of every week, I find a personal note from the Universe in my email inbox. Well, yeah, I know there are thousands of earth souls receiving this same message from Mike Dooley, the creator of http://www.tut.com, but it's fun to believe the Universe is talking directly to me. So often the message of the day has been eerily timely… such as this one:

"Tell me, when you think of taking consistent action in the general direction of your dreams, Susan, do you imagine discipline, stamina, work, sacrifice, monotony, courage, and strategies, or are you thinking adventure, discovery, new friends, excitement at the crack of dawn, magic, surprises, fun, laughter, and, on occasion, the Macarena?

Cool! Me too, "HEY!"
    The Universe

PS. "Your chosen perspective, Susan, changes everything."

Well, that's a no-brainer. I choose door number 2!

I didn't always feel this way. I thought the first scenario was what work looked like, and the second was all about play and never the twain would meet.

I had a real Aha moment when the Universe gave me this poke in the ribs last week. Especially the PS. "Your chosen perspective, Susan, changes everything." I realized I had been receiving subtle, and not so subtle, signs of this truth in my life lately.

A few months ago on a Sunday, I trotted out to my car to run a quick errand. The back passenger side tire was completely flat. I studied it carefully to determine if it had human help getting that way. Two years ago, also on a Sunday, I trotted out to my car to discover that both tires on the passenger side were completely flat and had been slashed with a knife. Random. Not a good feeling.

So, I called my insurance company for emergency roadside service and they arranged for a tow truck to come out. The driver was cranky, told me the stem on the tire had been deliberately cut and when I thought out loud "Why would somebody do that?", he said it was the neighborhood I lived in. I tell you, this guy was rude and cranky! I knew from my former experience that there was a tire center open on Sunday, so he only had to fill it with air. He was less cranky then and went on his way.

But by now I am upset. I am ranting and raving about the neighborhood and that I am going to move. I've had it with neighbors who would slash your tires for the fun of it. Or toss a drink cup in your yard because they are too lazy to dispose of it properly. Or let their dog do his business by your tree. Blah. Blah. Blah.

I got to the tire center and settled in for what I was told might be a long wait in a hard plastic chair. It actually wasn't all that long before someone came out and told me that the tire stem had NOT been deliberately cut, but had heavy wear on it from taking corners too close and rubbing on the curb. Oops… guilty. They didn't even charge me for fixing it. Wow. What a good feeling.

My perspective was flip-flopping back and forth like a fish out of water that Sunday. The good part was that I got it. I became totally aware that I choose my perspective. I'd worked up a good head of steam over something that was not even true and was ready to sell my house and move. I bought into the cranky tow truck driver's perspective.

My true perspective is that I love my house, I like my neighbors, I don't mind picking up the stray litter and tossing it, and sometimes a dog's gotta go when it's gotta go. No big deal.

Whether it's work, play or the everyday happenings of life, I am choosing the perspective behind door number 2: …adventure, discovery, new friends, excitement at the crack of dawn, magic, surprises, fun, laughter, and, on occasion, even the Macarena!

With loving kindess,

Susan

Web 2.0 and Social Networking

Facebook is where it's at, folks. It is exploding right now and there are so many professionals and entrepreneurs who have joined this growing phenomenon. At first I just wasn't getting what all the fuss was about. But I got curious when people I highly respect were raving about it in teleseminars and newsletters. So about six weeks ago I stuck my toe in the water and joined Facebook. I have over 1000 Friends now. I am making amazing connections, networking with great people all over the world, and talking with a few about joint venture projects.

To add me as a Friend, go http://profile.to/susanhenderson/. If you don't have a Facebook account yet, it is very easy to set up. Please feel free to ask me any questions if you are new to all this; I would be happy to share what I have learned to help shorten your learning curve. I will consider offering a free teleclass on the subject, if there is enough interest.
Zap me an email and let me know.

Stay Tuned

In the next day or two, I will be announcing a new service for creative multipreneurs that I think you will enjoy and gain great benefit from. I am putting the finishing touches on it and will fling open the doors very soon.

Featured Article - Change Your Label, Change Your Life

Many of us have always known we were wired differently, and we were not destined to follow a traditional career or life path. Oh yes, we may have been pressured by parents, teachers, school counselors and even our peers to quit being such a flake, settle down, choose one thing and stick to it, for cryin' out loud.

You may have been labeled a 'Jack (or Jill) of all Trades, Master of None' (ouch); or 'Creative' (artists are all eccentric, don't you know?). You may have been diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder) or AD/HD (with hyperactivity thrown in) and therefore saddled with the stigma of a 'disorder'. Or you may have been repeatedly told you are 'too sensitive'… or a 'daydreamer'… or 'not working up to your potential'… or 'easily distracted'… or… eh, you get it.

So, mostly these labels don't feel too good, do they? They make us feel like we don't quite measure up. But there's good news afloat. Let's take a look at the positive labels that have been popping up in books and articles in the last few years for people with a yearning to know and experience many things. How does 'Gifted Adult' feel? What about 'Renaissance Soul?'  How about Barbara Sher's label, 'Scanner', for people of multiple interests?  Garret LoPorto uses the label 'DaVinci' in his book, The DaVinci Method. He says, "DaVincis are the change agents of society. DaVincis are the world's greatest leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, inventors, revolutionaries and rock stars." Wow.

However you feel about labels, they do have a positive place in our lives. They help us understand ourselves better and to realize that we are not alone. We can find a place to fit comfortably. They may help others to understand us better. We now are starting to believe in and appreciate our gifts like creativity, flexibility, curiosity, big picture thinking, and entrepreneurial spirit.

When I first started publishing this ezine two years ago, I loved the label of 'Successful Dilettante.' However, some people think of the dilettante label as something negative. I thought about the people I attract into my life, who I best serve, and what label I would gladly wear myself. 'Creative Multipreneur' does that best for me and I hope it feel like a good positive fit for you, too.

With loving kindess,

Susan

Featured Article - What Now Brown Cow?

"What now is not just a panic-stricken question tossed out into a dark unknown. What now can also be our joy. It is a declaration of possibility, of promise, of chance. It acknowledges that our future is open, that we may well do more than anyone expected of us, that at every point in our development we are still striving to grow."
~ author Ann Patchett, from her book What now?

What now? is the title of a small book, readable in one sitting, by one of my favorite authors, Ann Patchett. It is based on her lauded commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College yet is applicable to anyone who is transitioning from one life stage to another, changing careers, or at any point where they are struggling with that question.

In an essay on the Amazon page for this book she shares: "When the first copy came in the mail, I gave it to my 86-year-old mother-in-law who was visiting from Mississippi. After she read it, she said she wanted copies for all of her friends. "We’re going through a real period of What now? ourselves," she told me. "At our age we’re all wondering what’s going to happen next. The question is always there. It’s just that sometimes you hear it a little louder."

A few months ago I found myself stopped dead in my tracks, hopelessly stuck, and yes, a wee bit panic-stricken.  My life consisted of work, work, work but I didn't like the direction my business had taken.  Everything seemed to be a struggle. I lost my joy. So being an avid reader and life-long learner, I set out to find some answers and find my way back to that joy of living and working.

Two things have worked miraculously (for me) to bring me back into action.  One is this inspiring book that although only 97 pages of text and photos, speaks volumes.

The other is a process exercise created by Robert Middleton of Action Plan Marketing that works beautifully to get a person unstuck.  He created this process to help independent professionals who are stuck in implementing their marketing plans.

However, it works in any area where you may be stuck. My buddy coach took me through the process and I have it in my own coaching toolkit to help my clients get unstuck.  If you are interested in learning more, contact me.

You can also find info on Robert's blog at: http://actionplan.blogs.com and click on Unstuck = Unstoppable in the right column.

I am feeling pretty unstoppable myself.  How about you?

With loving kindess,

Susan

Featured Article - Spring Clean Your Life

As the days lengthen and become warmer, a lot of us acquire newfound energy to shake ourselves out of the winter doldrums, lethargy and hibernation. The hopeful are planting colorful primroses while crocus bulbs planted last fall are poking their flower heads up to take a peek around.

Some of us just naturally feel the urge to clean our nests at this time.  Possibly it was a family ritual in your childhood to open your home to fresh air and sunshine, polishing up the windows and clearing out the winter's accumulation of dust bunnies and clutter.

While this time of high energy, high hopes and spring renewal is a great time to clean up your homes, yards, and messy cars, it is also a good time to extend this clean-up process to all areas of your life.  Putting up with, or tolerating, the messy areas is a huge drain on your energy and a noisy distraction from fully enjoying the good things happening in your life—which can result in missed opportunities.  It's like driving while looking in the rearview mirror.

First identify all that you have been tolerating in your life. Don't just think about it; make a list. Start with the obvious physical environment—home, car, garage, yard/garden, equipment, and office.  Take a tablet and pen and walk around these spaces. Take a close look at your work, job, or business relationships and systems. Write down what you are tolerating about your spouse, partner, friends and children's behaviors and habits.  Don't forget your own behaviors and habits.  Everything.  Big and small. If it annoys you, trips you up or nags at you, write it down.

Study your list carefully, and this may sound odd, but note the benefits of having and maintaining these tolerations. List at least one benefit to holding on to each toleration and then list the costs of keeping that toleration in place. What damage does it cause you?  Is it worth it?

Now select the costliest toleration on your list and completely eliminate it. If you have to work up to the biggest one, choose ten smaller tolerations and wipe them out first.  You will be amazed at the energy you gain by plugging up these leaks. Like the "little engine that could," you will pick up steam as you get up and over those first big hills.

For example, a great big toleration for me was attached to my identity as a fiber artist and weaver.  I immersed myself in the whole sheep-to-shawl thing for 4-5 years investing a great deal of money into equipment, fiber and education and I loved it. Like most creative multipreneurs, I totally soaked it all up until I reached my saturation point and was ready for a new challenge.

But because I was so invested in this identity, I held on to all this stuff hauling it with me as my gypsy soul moved me hither and yon. It finally dawned on me one spring day about five years ago that I had not threaded up that loom for ten years!  Also around this time, I read an early manuscript of The Renaissance Soul by Margaret Lobenstine and recognized myself in those pages. I was getting ready to move again. It was time to be complete with this toleration. I posted a flyer on the bulletin board at the local weaving shop and sold it all to someone new to weaving. It then freed up so much energy for new shifts to happen in my life.

Just keep in mind that when dealing with other people you can't necessarily change them, but you can tell them that you are changing and you will not be tolerating some things you may have put up with in the past.  Be very clear what boundaries you have put in place.  No need to go on the attack. Be kind, but firm. You may want to invite them to join you in becoming toleration free. It is an attractive and uthentic way to live your life.

Hugs,

Susan

If you are looking for articles, tools, resources and book referrals to assist you on your journey in redesigning a life that encompasses your many passions and interests, and you don't want to pawn the family silver to do so, you are in the right place.

In the first three issues of this ezine in 2008, I offered articles and resources on capturing your dreams on paper and organizing those ideas and goals in order to move into a workable action plan. I hope you are on your way to acknowledging and achieving some of those items on your list. You may or may not have noticed that the tools suggested are very affordable. The title of the following article is the credo for my work and this ezine.  Enjoy!

Featured Article - Life ReDesign on a Dime

I admit that I am a bit of an HGTV junkie. For those that don't know about HGTV, it is a cable television station here in the U.S. featuring home and garden/property improvement shows. I especially love the shows where they go in and fix up a room or two on a low budget, often re-purposing items the homeowner already has and it turns out looking great.  One of my favorite shows is called Design on a Dime.  Of course the designers are equipped with top of the line power tools to build or re-purpose furniture and other projects, yet there is still this sense of great value added for little damage to the budget. Creative problem solving at its best.

We all would like to know how to redesign our homes, businesses and lives without breaking the bank.  When I conducted a survey of the readers of this ezine last May, one of the questions I asked under the section titled Problems and Challenges was "What stops you from getting started on designing a multipreneurial life for yourself?" Below are the multiple choices and you could pick more than one:

  • Choosing a business (or businesses)
  • Determining my target market
  • Lack of money
  • Lack of business knowledge
  • Timing
  • Age
  • Physical condition
  • Lack of support from family and/or friends
  • Fear of losing health insurance and other benefits
  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • Limiting beliefs

The top choice was "Lack of money." For the curious, it was followed by "Choosing a business (or businesses)" and then "Limiting beliefs."  The lowest vote getters were "Age" and "Physical condition."

Note: I offered an article only to those who participated in the survey that addresses the above obstacles. If you would like a copy, send me an email and I will send it to you.

Redesigning your life does not necessarily require boatloads of cold hard cash. There are many free and low-cost tools that you might already possess in your toolbox, such as: creativity, ingenuity, passion, love of learning, persistence, flexibility and a strong support team in place.  Also, your skills, experience, knowledge and natural talents. For what you don't already know there are books, videos or dvds, live teleclasses, audio recordings of teleseminars and business counseling in your local SBA (U.S. Small Business Association) office.

As I ferret out these tools, resources and ideas for redesigning your life on a dime, I will gladly share them with you here. Since I am a results coach for creative multipreneurs, you may also find me cheering you on and encouraging you to go for the gold!

Warmly,

Susan

Greetings/News

A warm welcome to all you lovely Creative Multipreneurs. If you are looking for articles, tools, resources and book referrals to assist you on your journey in redesigning a life that encompasses your many passions and interests, you are in the right place.

In the first two issues of 2008, we covered the importance of getting your life goals out of your head and written down on paper as a declaration of your intention to accomplish them before you "kick the bucket."  Then I shared ways to capture those incoming goals and ideas on an ongoing basis and a little bit about sorting them out and deciding where to start.  In today's article I will share some tips, resources and simple systems that will help you get into action and make your dream goals a reality.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Featured Article - Tickle Yourself, Elmo

According to Elizabeth Hagan, author of Organize With Confidence, a good definition for clutter as it pertains to paper is "postponed decisions."  You have a piece of paper and you aren't sure what to do with it.  So you put it "here for now." Ah, here is another piece of paper and it also goes "here for now." And so on. That is where stacks and stacks come from.

I recently listened to an interview with Elizabeth by Robert Middleton of Action Plan Marketing and picked up some great ideas and tips that helped me rediscover my desktop and other flat surfaces in my office. We creative types like to have things out where we can see them, you know?

Get out from under those piles of paper.
The first tool she tells her clients to get is a wire mesh three-tier desk shelf. The top shelf if "in." The middle is "out." The bottom is "to file." Every piece of paper that comes into your office goes in the top basket.  Once you pick it up from that top basket, it may not go back into it.

So you have this item in your hand and you make one of three decisions.  She calls this the FAT principle.  The "F" stands for "file."  The "A" stands for "act." And the "T" stands for "toss" (which includes shred or recycle).

But first you might need to clear your desktop so you have a place for your desk shelf unit.  And while you're at it you might as well tackle those piles on the chairs, floor and other surfaces.  Get three banker's boxes or bins of that size. Label them File, Act and Toss.  Don't agonize and spend a lot of time with this.  Ask yourself the following questions. Elizabeth Hagan calls this the "art of waste basketry."

1.  Does this paper require action?  If not, get rid of it.
2.  Can you identify a specific use for this piece of paper? No?  Get rid of it.
3.  Is it difficult to obtain again?  If it's hard, keep it. If it isn't, get rid of it.
4.  Is it recent enough to be useful? Uh-uh? Get an updated copy if needed.
5.  Are there tax or legal implications?  Not sure? Keep it and ask CPA later.

…and the biggest, most important question:

6.  If I get rid of this piece of paper and would need it again someday, what is the worst thing that would happen to me? If you can live with the answer, get rid of it.

Quiet on the set… Action!
Start with your action items first and break them down into three parts:

Act Now:  If you can take care of an item in two minutes or less, just do it.  Get it out of your life.

Act/Delegate:  If you have an action item that someone else can do, pass it one.  You don't always have to do everything yourself.  You might consider hiring a virtual assistant.

Act Later:  These are generally all those papers you have been piling up with the intention to take action on later. You are afraid to put them away because you might not find them again and they really do need some sort of action taken sooner or later.

Elizabeth has a great system she calls the Command Center.  I love it.  It works beautifully.  If you have a file drawer in your desk that is within reach at all times, use it. If not, purchase one of those desktop file holders. I got mine at Staples. It is black wire mesh.

Oh, that tickles!
The first thing to go into your Command Center is a "Tickler File." You can get a one-piece unit that expands like an accordion and has 31 pockets for 31 days of the month. You may also want a few file folders for future months.

So it's this simple.  Pick up the first piece of paper that is an "Act Later" item. Ask yourself, "When do I need to see this item again to complete it before it is due?" The answer tells you where it goes in your Command Center Tickler File. If you are starting this midway or towards the end of a month, then the pockets before the current date will hold those items coming up in the following month.

Include those items you have written in your small notebook or on 3 X 5 cards that you want to put into action.  (We talked about these in the January 5th and 20th issues of this ezine. Remember? One idea per page?)  If it is a big goal and needs to be broken down into action steps, go ahead and file under the date that you want to schedule in the time to do that part and then you will be able to schedule the action steps. Before you know it, that "someday" goal is well on the way to happening.

The important thing is to check your Tickler File every day. Make it a habit. If you always check your email first thing, then do it before you check your email to create this new habit.

But wait… there's more.
Behind the Tickler File, inside the desktop file box, put some hanging file folders.  These hold your General Action files. These, of course, are driven by your needs, but you may want one file for each person in your life you deal with on a regular basis. You may have your current project folders here. You may have meeting folders. Or data entry folders for entering business cards you've collected into your contact database. Orders pending.  Receipts to enter in bookkeeping program. You get the idea. These folders are for all the things we have in action and don't want to forget. Now we can find them without digging through piles.

I hope this is helpful to you in clearing your paper clutter and getting a simple system in place to handle it. You will be amazed at the time and energy you can free up.

There is much more in this interview that I didn't have room to include here. Check out the resource section below for the link to this audio product.

Warmly,

Susan
